Dear Diary,
Today I’m going to try something different. I’m going to write about my day using the 3rd person voice. It’s a creative writing exercise. I learned about it when I started college and I’ve always wanted to try it out since. So here it goes diary, don’t laugh.
KoonKoon awoke to his alarm as usual. But he didn’t groan and hit the snooze button, which was highly unusual. At first he had the urge to but then he remembered. It was Lobsty’s birthday!
KoonKoon got up hurriedly at the thought of surprising his best friend and cousin Lobsty. He looked around his room, which was oddly tidy because he had prepared for the surprise party the night before. He grabbed his white button shirt in his tiny paws and got dressed for work. He tied his bowtie and then brushed his teeth and grabbed his briefcase and started the brief walk to the bus stop.
He hopped over the speed bumps which were hard for him with his tiny little legs.
He got to the mall stop right as the bus arrived. He hopped up and said hello to Charlie, the bus driver. She was really nice and talked to the other buses when they needed to delay so that he could get to work on time by 8 o’clock a.m. He sat down in one of the rows, glad that he managed to get such a good seat that morning.
He listened to some Pink Floyd for a while, then switched to reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire all over again.
The bus ride seemed quicker than usual and he was relieved when he saw the 22 waiting at the Transit Center. He saw that Hilda was the bus driver this morning.
“Good morning Hilda”, he said cheerfully.
“Good morning KoonKoon, how are you today”?
“I’m great, its Lobsty’s birthday today and I’m throwing him a surprise party after work. He has no idea whatsoever, I can’t wait”, he said zealously.
“You are such a good friend KoonKoon, he’s waiting in the back for you. Have fun tonight”, she told him.
He headed towards the back of the bus, where Lobsty sat waiting, you couldn’t miss his shiny scales.
“Happy birthday”!
“Thank you KoonKoon”, Lobsty was obviously happy to see him for the morning commute.
“I can’t believe I’m a whole 20 years old today, it’s kind of surreal”, he said.
“It was weird for me too this year when I turned 20”, KoonKoon said and he knew Lobsty would never say it but he could tell his best friend was a little sad thinking about no party tonight. He thought he had to work late but really KoonKoon called his boss, Uriel Bartowski and asked him to pretend Lobsty was working late. KoonKoon presented the little package he had so fastidiously carried to his best friend.
Lobsty opened it to see the beautiful teacake KoonKoon had specially ordered for him. He was so happy! He said it was so beautiful, he didn’t think he could eat it.
“Well you better”, KoonKoon responded, amusedly and Lobsty laughed then got off the bus and headed to work at State Farm with his friend Jake.
KoonKoon got off the bus and headed to work as well, at the next stop. KoonKoon could barely focus all day, he was so excited about Lobsty’s surprise party. He said hi to Cammie and that’s pretty much all he remembered about work that day.
“Goodbye everyone, I am off to the store to get supplies”, he addressed the whole room, then left to a rousing reply of goodbye KoonKoons and have fun tonight KoonKoons. Before he knew it, he was back home. The whole trip was a blur, the store, picking up the cake, the trip back home. It was tricky getting the cake over the speed bumps; now that, he definitely remembered. Before he knew it, it was 4 o’clock p.m. and he had just finished decorating when the guests started arriving.
“Okay everyone start finding hiding places, first come first serve”. Then KoonKoon confirmed with his mom that they were all set. KoonKoon jumped in the fridge and hid with all of the Mikes Hard Lemonade and wine coolers.
KoonKoon heard a knock and then the door creaked open. “Happy Birthday Lobsty”, came his mom’s voice.
“Thank you Auntie Kris”, Lobsty responded.
“KoonKoon is running a bit late but please help yourself to a drink from the fridge”.
KoonKoon waited, shivering with anticipation as he heard Lobsty’s steps on the linoleum kitchen floor. Then he bit his lip as Lobsty scooted KoonKoon’s stepstool to the fridge.
Lobsty almost fell off the stepstool when KoonKoon jumped out and everyone yelled “Surprise”!
Lobsty was beside himself with happiness and KoonKoon directed him towards the Pizza and mommy’s secret jalapeno poppers, which are Lobsty’s favorite. The food was delicious.
Then it was time for presents. Lobsty loved everything he got, which was actually a lot, a really big pile.
And everyone sang happy birthday and with the last… “Happy birthday to you”! He blew out the candles. The party was so much fun, there were music and games until people gradually started heading home. Lobsty stayed the night and we kept going over how amazing it all was.
It was truly an amazing day!
