Zombie Apocalypse Post # 1

Today on KLC’s The Fluffy Dead …

63 Days In: 800 hours

KoonKoon woke up groggily this morning, trying to shake off the remnants of a dream where he was back in his old, comfy bed.

He glanced around at his bleak surroundings with a heavy heart. He wasn’t in his bed, and he knew he probably never would be again. Startled, he jumped, as he often did these days. That’s right—when dead humans start trying to eat little stuffed animals, you can’t afford to let your guard down. KoonKoon had always hoped this day would never come, even though a tiny part of him had secretly found the idea thrilling in theory.

The zombie apocalypse had finally arrived. Several months ago, something triggered a madness in most adult humans, causing them to turn on each other, at first, before their hunger took a more horrifying turn. Countless tiny humans and stuffed animals fled in terror, desperate to escape the monstrous ghouls. But they found little success, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty. KoonKoon and the others, however, knew exactly what needed to be done.

KoonKoon reached out to his animal friends through Instagram, and together they launched an operation across their home countries. They established safe houses and zones to gather and protect all the baby humans and animals. In the beginning, it was chaotic and incredibly terrifying. This crisis brought together two things KoonKoon had always been fascinated by but also deeply feared: zombies and Attack on Titan. For a normal human, the key was to avoid being eaten, but for the little animals, it felt like being surrounded by giant Titans. KoonKoon really didn’t want to get squished by a massive, grubby foot, though he supposed it was better than being eaten.

KoonKoon heard a rustling nearby and jumped, startled, only to realize it was just Momo shifting restlessly at his post. They had been cornered by Tizombs the night before and had found no shelter except for the abandoned treehouse above. (Tizomb was the name KoonKoon had come up with to refer to zombies in front of the little humans and animals without frightening them, a blend of Titan and zombie.) It was fortunate they didn’t have any humans with them because the weathered treehouse was in such poor condition that KoonKoon doubted it could support their weight. For safety, they decided to sleep in shifts; KoonKoon had taken the first, and Momo was nearing the end of his.

“How’s it looking outside, Momo?” KoonKoon asked though he didn’t have much hope.

“I’ve got a few stragglers, but most of the herd seems to have moved on,” Momo replied.

“We haven’t seen a herd like that in at least a month. I wonder what’s going on,” KoonKoon mused to his friend. The zombies weren’t as drawn to the adult stuffed animals, but they would still try to eat them if they had the chance. However, they were especially attracted to the little ones, both human and stuffed animals. That’s why he and his friends were working tirelessly across the globe to protect them all from the adult humans who had turned. The outbreak had spread all over the U.S. and then worldwide, as far as they knew, though no one was sure where it had all started.

“Let’s get moving, Momo. I think they only lost interest because there weren’t any humans with us this time. Our scent isn’t as strong to them, and I’m sure the rain helped,” KoonKoon said, glancing down at his soaked fur with a sigh.

They slid down the rain-slicked ropes and hopped into the Jeep. It was a kid’s electric Jeep, but it had served them well on their supply runs. KoonKoon hoped the power grid would hold out a little longer, though he knew it was only a matter of time before it failed.

They set off slowly, cautious of the Jeep’s noise, knowing it could attract any nearby zombies. The Jeep was incredibly useful for transporting supplies, but it wasn’t meant for escaping zombies; it was far too slow to outrun the more agile ones. However, its ample storage capacity had improved the efficacy of their supply runs.

“You think we should head back, KoonKoon?”

“Yeah, probably. We barely escaped that herd,” KoonKoon replied, squinting into the back of the Jeep as the dawn began to break. At least stuffed animals didn’t have to worry about getting wrinkles, he thought with a wry smile, briefly amused by his morbid sense of humor. He was abruptly brought back to the present as his eyes settled on their meager haul. He sighed in disappointment. “We didn’t get much, but it’s too risky to go any further tonight.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Momo said, dejectedly. “Oh well, at least we found a surprise for Sammy; she’s been having such a tough time lately.”

“Yeah, it’s been hard on her,” KoonKoon replied, his thoughts drifting to Sammy. She was a little human, around six or seven years old. They had found her alone during a supply run, hiding in a cabinet at Walmart. Somehow, she had been surviving on her own, though KoonKoon couldn’t fathom how given how small she was. They all suspected her mom and dad had turned, but no one had asked her; she hardly ever spoke, and KoonKoon was quite worried about her.

“I hope she likes her surprise and that it helps her communicate better with Mom,” he said, thinking about how his mom had seemed to form a special connection with Sammy. “Let’s head back to Stuffed Haven,” KoonKoon added with resolve.

They rounded the corner toward Stuffed Haven, creeping to avoid attracting unwanted attention. They hadn’t even reached the driveway when they heard the moans. The putrid stench of death followed closely behind the noise. Four zombies stood between them and the front gates of Stuffed Haven, blocking their path to safety.

“Squeak Squeak!” The terrified sound escaped KoonKoon before he could stop it. There was no way that two stuffed animals could take on all four zombies alone. It usually took several animals just to slow one down. As much as they wanted to race full speed to the gate and safety, they knew they couldn’t risk leading the zombies toward the kids. Momo glanced over at KoonKoon.

“For the kids,” KoonKoon said firmly.

Momo met his gaze with fierce determination. “For the kids!”

KoonKoon turned to face the zombies and growled, “Challenge accepted.”
