Ducky and Momo stood frozen in panic. After everything they had heard about this leader, they were terrified.
“Who do we have here”? came a booming voice from their leader, still enshrouded by shadow.
Ducky felt a squeeze on her wing; it was ChipChip, his paw hidden under his cloak. The squeeze gave her a feeling of support and her tension lessened slightly. She was grateful.
“I found these survivors while out on patrol. They had nowhere to go and were nearly starved, when I found them.”, ChipChip replied calmly.
“Very well, prepare them for briefing. I have a pressing matter to attend to first, but I want to evaluate these two… survivors, myself. I’ll decide what to do with them and possibly you later.” The shadow said before heading off the other direction.
Ducky noticed that the strange masked animals in the circle visibly relaxed almost immediately after the figure walked away. It seems ChipChip and the council was right. These poor animals definitely needed their help. The kind of help only Stuffed Haven could provide.
It wasn’t long after the strange animal left that the animals around them broke the circle. The masks slowly came off to reveal an interesting mix of stuffed animals of all sizes, types and color.
“I need to speak to someone briefly. Will you two be okay here for just a moment?” ChipChip asked them.
They nodded and ChipChip moved swiftly toward one of the stands. Is that what they were, Ducky wondered. They both looked around in amazement. This was a carnival of some sorts, with games and stands and wonderful sights. Beautiful displays, with vibrant colors. There was nothing garish about their surroundings and she wondered how it must be to live in such splendor.
An increase in the din of murmurs around them, pulled them from their thoughts. These animals were looking at them with a mixture of expressions and emotions. Wide eyed and curious, nervous, pensive and some scared. There were others that they couldn’t get a reading on either. It was clear this mission would require a delicate paw, and a tactful wing.
“Hello – “, Momo started to say when ChipChip returned with a stoic look on his face. His fur was mussed, as if he had been rubbing at it.
“Come with me”, he said in a low soft voice. They gave a smile to the group in front of them, which was widely not returned. Then with a breath of courage, they followed ChipChip into the stand he had disappeared into before.
They walked through a narrow hole that had been carved into the side. “I am about to show you one of our biggest secrets and you must promise never to tell anyone outside of our operation. Our very survival depends on it. I assure you I am not being over dramatic. Can you promise that?” He asked earnestly.
They nodded fiercely and could not have meant anything more. “Okay then follow me.”
“I know that you have a healing center at Stuffed Haven, but this here is… special. It is truly one of a kind. I don’t have too many details, but earlier today, someone was hurt. From what I hear, gravely and it doesn’t look hopeful.”ChipChip said sadly.
Ducky’s heart skipped a beat as she remembered her own surgery; the needle was sharp and incredibly painful. She shook the memory off. She worried for the poor animal.

“We will be walking by the door and must be very quiet. I would never be allowed to bring strangers here, but you must know what is at stake.” ChipChip said seriously.
They walked up to the door doing their best to be silent. There was a poor animal on the cot inside and they were in incredible pain, judging from the agonizing wails echoing around them. They could see a jagged cut that was bleeding stuffing. Ordinarily this could be fixed with a painful, but routine seam. The shredded fur though, was the difficult part. Too much had been stripped away. There was no way to repair a wound like that fully; the poor creature would lose a paw, at least.
ChipChip held up a paw to his mouth to remind them to stay silent for what came next. There was movement in the room and a massive paw held out something delicate and fluffy to the patient. It must be stuffing, Ducky presumed. They must be doing a transfusion.
That would never be enough stuffing, Momo thought as he watched. ChipChip made a shushing sound as Momo gasped in horror. The paw that held the fluffy substance, raised it up to the patient’s mouth. What sick and twisted stuff was going on here? He looked to ChipChip, who gave him a silencing look. They needed to get out of here now, Momo thought.
ChipChip squeezed his paw and motioned towards the room. Momo was stunned as he looked up. The pieces of fur were seaming themselves together. No needle or thread was in sight. The wound seemed to magically heal itself. Ducky looked as awestruck as he did. ChipChip motioned them and they followed him further into the stand.
“What was that?” Momo whispered, still reeling from what he had seen.
“Now is not the time or place, if he catches us- “, ChipChip started.
“We aren’t going anywhere until you tell us what we just saw”, Momo said firmly. He was still on edge; adrenaline fueled by incredulity coursed through him.
“Okay, okay, I will tell you, but then we have to go. I will explain everything fully, as soon as we’re through here, I promise. No paws crossed.” ChipChip said exasperatedly.
“It is called, Cotton Candy.”
